Yes. This is what my friend Sam said to me when he came accross this article.

Sam works as a PC engineer and first line support technician at a major PC store. Reading about the self reparing chip makes his future unstable if he continues to do what he does and not prepare himself for the future.

Technology continues to either evovle or obselete many jobs accross several industries. Especially when it comes to internet/web technologies, it is having a great impact on our jobs. Jobs that are traditionally done by manual labour are now being done by computer chips for a fraction of cost and time. Whether you like it or not this will affect each and everyone of us.

What is to be done about it? Best thing to do is to embrace the change and prepare yourself for future jobs. Take advantage of the technology, be independent, be enterprenual, show your skiils to the best.

Delete your resume

If you are thinking of a career in social media and have got a word doc resume. Delete it!

I had two recruitment companies chasing me to fill in a vacancy for the Social Media Assistant role. They have been bombarding me with perfectly formated (word, pdf) and well written resumes and cover letter.

What did I do with these applications?  I deleted them straigth away.  Wonder why is that? Here are the reasons:

• 1) Last thing I want is to see a word file attachment resume for this post (for that matter most of the jobs these days)
• 2) None of the applicant where search able on Google.
• 3) Sending a word document/ pdf  resume or a cover letter is counter productive when applying for social media jobs.  Let your work speak for you.

Spending time

Most of us are told at the place we work on how and what to spend our time (9-5) on. No doubt this might lead to efficiency and productivity, but can this lead to creativity, innovation, value, or making something worth talking about?

Yes one can create an atmosphere or culture that encourages to be more creative or innovative but none other than you and only yourself can actually make this happen.

Stop spending time and start creating stuff.

Extra Minute

• It would only take an extra minute for the customer service rep to make sure you have answered all queries from the customer
• It would only take an extra minute for the doctor to follow up to see their patient is doing okay with the treatment
• It would only take an extra minute for the valeting service to make sure they put in an air freshener
• It would only take an extra minute for the sales man to connect with the prospect beyond commercial level.

If it only takes an extra minute to make you or your service stand out why so many of us decide not to?

Why we don't teach our business grads or our employees or the professional for this extra minute?

I think this extra minute or the extra gesture plays an important part.

Do you spare that extra minute?

Obstacles

There obstacles in business which would stop your customers doing business with you.

I'm sure your company has one or more:

We don't accept AMEX

We don't accept cheques

We don't deliver there

We are not open on Sunday

We don't offer parking

Yet companies prefer doing what they think is convenient for them instead of removing these obstacles.

When was the last time you spent time working on removing these obstacles? Some of these don't need a great deal of thinking or coming up with innovative solution they are pretty simple stuff.

Answering too little too much

Retaining attention of visitors of your website can be tricky business.

One important thing is striking a balance between the style and quantity of copy of your website.

Clear, lucid, and short copy is always good, but how do you know if it is enough to make your visitors take action you want them to?

Should you provide extensive information about your product on your website and risk losing their attention?

or

Should you leave some questions unanswered in order to trigger a conversation between you and your customers?

This would depend on your sales cycle. If you wish to generate a lead leave some questions unanswered and encourage your visitor to ask those questions.

If you wish to convert the visitor into a buying customer whilst they are on your website, it has to have complete information presented in precise and concise manner.
